A flood watch is in effect for Kauai County and Oahu from this evening through Thursday afternoon, the National Weather Service said early this morning, warning that flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible.

Forecasters said a developing area of low pressure north of the Hawaiian Islands will draw deep tropical moisture northward, bringing a threat of heavy rain over Kauai and Oahu tonight through Thursday.

Heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop tonight and continue through Thursday as that moisture moves over the state, weather officials said. Forecasters said heavy showers could train, or repeatedly move over the same areas, producing intense rain rates.

“Flood-prone roads and other low-lying areas may close due to elevated runoff and overflowing streams,” according to the NWS. “Urban areas may receive more significant flooding and property damage due to rapid runoff.”

Weather officials urged residents and visitors to monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued.
