Man, 74, dies in fatal hit-and-run on Maui

A 74-year-old pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run in Kihei Monday night.

He has been identified as Oscar Coronado of Kihei, according to the Maui Police Department.

Police are seeking the public’s help in identifying the driver and vehicle in connection with the deadly collision that occurred on South Kihei Road, approximately 45 feet south of Walaka Street at about 7:35 pm.

Police said a sport utility vehicle was traveling northbound when it struck Coronado. He was thrown onto the roadway upon impact.

Police said the SUV driver did not stop to render aid and continued to travel northbound on South Kihei Road. The vehicle was last seen turning right onto Kanani Road.

Coronado was taken in critical condition to the Maui Memorial Medical Center. Shortly after his arrival, he died from injuries sustained in the collision.

Witnesses described the vehicle that struck Coronado as a red SUV.

It’s not immediately known whether speed, alcohol or drugs were factors as an investigation is still ongoing.

Police have not made any arrests at this time.

This is Maui County’s 10th traffic-related fatality this year compared to six at the same time last year.

Anyone with information on Monday’s hit-and-run is urged to contact officer Alvin Ota of the Maui Police Department’s Traffic Division-Vehicular Homicide Unit at 808-270-6537 or the police non-emergency number at 808-244-6400.
