Man drowns off a Makaha beach

A man who ran into trouble in waters off a Makaha beach was pronounced dead at the Waianae Comprehensive Health Center this afternoon.

Witnesses said the man, who appears to be in his 60s, was caught in a rip current and dragged away from the shore in waters off the Makaha Beach Cabanas condominium complex off Lahilahi Street, according to Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Department of Emergency Services.

Bystanders managed to bring him back ashore where they performed CPR until emergency personnel arrived shortly after 2:25 p.m., Cheplic said.

Paramedics treated him and took him to a hospital where he was pronounced, Cheplic said.
