Honolulu’s Michelle Wie shot to the top of the leaderboard today at the Honda LPGA Thailand golf tournament after shooting a bogey-free 68 on the Siam Country Club course in Chonburi, Thailand.

Wie (68—137) was the clubhouse leader for about a half-hour before South Korea’s I.K. Kim (73—136) closed with a birdie at the par-5 18th to give her the one-shot lead. Kim opened with a 9-under 63 yesterday, but struggled today as Wie drew even at No. 15 with a birdie.

The Punahou School graduate enters tomorrow’s third round tied for second with world No. 1 Yani Tseng (71—137) of Taiwan. Tseng joined in the fun with a birdie at the 16th that dropped her to 7 under for the tournament and into a tie with Wie.

The 21-year-old Wie began the second round tied for sixth some six shots off Kim’s torrid pace. She carded two birdies on the front and then parred nine consecutive holes before managing back-to-back birdies at Nos. 14 and 15 to grab a share of the lead.

The part-time Stanford University student began the LPGA season ranked No. 11 in the world. Fellow American Paula Creamer passed Wie on Valentine’s Day to get back into the top 10. Creamer shot a 70 today and is tied for fourth at 5-under 139.
