Drunken-driving arrests decrease on Big Island

 

Drunken-driving arrests on the Big Island are down 11 percent for the first 16 weeks of the year, compared to the same point last year.

Through Sunday, Hawaii County police made 436 DUI arrests, compared to 490 during the same period last year. The Kona district had the most arrests with 181, and the South Hilo district had 161.

Major accidents are down 4 percent — 430 this year compared to 448 last year. There have been eight traffic fatalities this year compared to nine last year.
