Kamehameha Highway reopened after crash downs poles

Both lanes of Kamehameha Highway were reopened about 2 p.m. today after a car knocked down two telephone poles this morning, closing the road in both directions between Kahaluu and Waiahole.

The accident happened at about 2:30 a.m. The car hit a telephone pole near Waiahole Homestead Road and then continued until it knocked down another telephone pole near Waihee Road a few miles away, police said. The driver was not seriously injured.

During the morning commute, police set up a contraflow flow lane between Waiahole Valley and Waiahole Homestead roads and motorists were able to drive around the second downed telephone pole near Waihee Road.

Ann Nishida-Fry, Hawaiian Telcom spokeswoman, said telephone company crews had to replace both poles and the overhead cables. The work was finished about 2 p.m. and both lanes were reopened.

There was no disruption of telephone service in the area.
