MANDARIN BALL HONORS ORGANIZER | 1. Tin Myaing Thein, center, was the guest of honor Nov. 5 at the Hawaii Chinese Civic Association's 2011 Mandarin Ball at the Hawaii Prince Hotel. She received the group's Mandarin Award for her work as a community organizer and researcher, and for her success in directing and expanding the community-based programs of the Pacific Gateway Center. HCCA board member Wesley Fong, left, and his wife, Linda, joined association President Dr. Joseph W.C. Young and his wife, Barbara, in welcoming her to the ball.

CELEBRATING THE ARTS ON LUXURY ROW | 5. Tod's Waikiki General Manager Sanford Lee talked with ceramist Jennifer Hill on Nov. 3 at the opening-night reception for the Sixth Annual Celebration of the Arts at Luxury Row in Waikiki. Hill held "Hive A," one of a series that is on display at Tod's through Dec. 4. Works by 11 other local artists are on display at Tiffany, Chanel and the other designer-brand stores on the Row.

"OKLAHOMA!" EXCELLENT AT UH | 4. Walt Gaines (Ali Hakim), left, Brandon Gregory Martinez (Curly), Karissa J. Murrell Adams (Laurey), Garett T.K. Taketa (Jud Fry) and Robbie Johnson (Will Parker) were still in costume -- and pretty much still in character -- as they celebrated the successful opening of "Oklahoma!" Nov. 4 at Kennedy Theatre. They had good reason to celebrate; the show is excellent in all respects.

A GREAT NIGHT FOR McKNIGHT | 3. Brian McKnight, left, talked backstage with promoter Tom Moffatt after his superb one-man concert Nov. 3 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. McKnight performed for more than 90 minutes, went backstage to freshen up and then went out to the lobby to meet fans waiting for autographs.

HOT'S "NILE" A SPLENDID EVENING | 2. "Splendor on the Nile" was the theme of Hawaii Opera Theatre's "Aida Ball 2011" gala Nov. 5 at the Sheraton Waikiki Hawaii Ballroom. HOT supporters got a preview of the 2012 HOT season when Leon Williams, left, presented a selection from "The Pearl Fishers"; Mary Chesnut-Hicks (Amneris), Kip Welborn (Radames) and Blythe Kelsey-Takemasa (Aida) sang "The Tomb Scene" from "Aida"; and Kristin Stone delivered an animated aria from "Don Pasquale."
