A "CIRQUE" FOR ST. FRANCIS | 1. Frank De Lima, third from left, was the guest of honor and featured performer Aug. 25 at "Cirque De Lima," a Portuguese-themed fundraiser for the St. Francis Intergenerational Center at the Ala Moana Hotel. Sister William Marie Eleniki and "Cirque De Lima" co-chairman John Henry Felix shared credit for the sold-out event. Patrick Downes wrote the lyrics for De Lima's final song of the evening, a new parody of "Lucille" titled "The Ballad of Larry Silva, John Henry Felix and Stanford Carr." Eleniki, president of the St. Francis Healthcare Foundation of Hawaii, said the center could be open by this time next year.

DENNIS CARROLL HELPS FRIENDS | 5. Kennedy Theatre manager Marty Myers helped host a retirement party for University of Hawaii-Manoa theater professor Dennis Carroll, left, Sunday at Dave & Buster's. Professor emeritus Terence Knapp was one of the many friends who attended the event and helped raised more than $2,000 for the Friends of Kennedy Theatre, a group that helps the theater meet expenses not covered by its UH funding.

LIANA'S BIG NIGHT | 4. Liana Mason welcomed Hawaii karaoke king Walter Omori to the CD release party for her self-titled debut recording Aug. 27 at Hank's Cafe Honolulu. Mason was a top-three finalist in Omori's annual karaoke contest two years in a row and recording a CD is a natural step forward for her.

POLSON GIVES "HARVEY" A HANA HOU | 3. Cast members Patricia Gillespie (Veta Louise), Sam Polson (Elwood) and S. Rick Crump (taxi driver) celebrated the opening of The Actors Group production of "Harvey" Aug. 26 in Iwilei. It's the third time Polson has played Elwood at TAG, and he is excellent. Crump played a different character in the two previous TAG productions.

KAIWA RETURNS FOR KA HIMENI 'ANA | 2. Ka Himeni 'Ana emcee Manu Boyd, left, greeted contest judge Bill Kaiwa shortly before competition started Aug. 27 at the Hawaii Theatre. Contestants are judged on their harmonizing, musicianship and Hawaiian language skills, and Kaiwa's knowledge of the music and the language has made him a key figure in the success of the culturally significant contest.
