WHERE TO, CHARLEY? | Charley’s Taxi has added digital wireless global positioning satellite technology to its fleet. The installation of the IntelliFleet system by Canada-based Mentor Engineering Inc. is the first in Hawaii and the second in the nation, said Charley’s Taxi. The dispatch and tracking software displays the passenger’s number and address on the call-taker’s screen and the fare is then automatically offered to the nearest driver. The system is designed to shorten the time and route taken by cabs to pick up passengers, which Charley’s says will enhance safety for customers as well as cabbies, and also will decrease the company’s carbon footprint. Dexter Cadiente sits inside a Charley’s taxi that is outfitted with the new GPS system.
