Daniel Nakamitsu and Curtis Kahiapo work in the Federal Aviation Administration's $1.5 million control tower simulator, unveiled Wednesday at the Honolulu Airport as the FAA commemorates its 75th year. The simulator is programmed to mimic various environmental conditions and emergency situations that controllers might face. "It's a lot less stressful, teaching them here," said Richard Coppola, an instructor and controller.

Federal Aviation Administration officials demonstrated the Honolulu air traffic controller training simulator Wednesday at Honolulu Airport. Remote pilot operators Lahele Geiger, left, and Pukui Apihai ran the simulators, choosing different scenarios that air traffic controllers are tested on, such as experiencing rain, windy conditions, snow and even planes landing with one engine on fire.
