Hand grenade found at Hapuna park on Big Island

Army explosive experts found a live Japanese hand grenade Tuesday at Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area on the west coast of the island of Hawaii.

Workers moved the grenade and detonated it in the same area where a Japanese 57 mm mortar was found and destroyed on Saturday.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, under contract from the Department of Land and Natural Resources, has been conducting surface and subsurface scanning in Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area to locate possible unexploded ordnance left over from World War II-era military activity.

The grenade was found southeast of the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel.
