5. Gov. Neil Abercrombie, center, welcomed maestro Naoto Otomo, left, and concertmaster Ignace "Iggy" Jang to the post-show reception for symphony supporters, musicians and staff at Washington Place. The festivities included brief speeches, encounters with interesting people and a light dinner menu of gourmet pupu by Nobu Waikiki, Roy's, Hiroshi Eurasion Tapas and the Halekulani. All things considered, it was a perfect start for Hawaii's long-awaited new orchestra.

HSO DEBUT A DAY TO REMEMBER | 4. Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra supporters Ginny Tiu and Jim Nabors talked during intermission at the symphony's premiere performance last Sunday at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. Nabors was gracious and accommodating as always, posing for photos with fans and entertaining friends with beautifully delivered stories about the time he was told "just sing, don't talk" when doing a concert, and about a symphony cello player's search for the right gown.

3. Junior League of Honolulu President Lisa Haeringer, right, congratulated Sacs 2012 co-chairwoman Lizette Chang-Zahn on a job well done as the final section of silent-auction items closed amid a flurry of last-minute bidding. Haeringer was dressed for the occasion in a Diane von Furstenberg zipper-front dress and mentioned that it unzips both ways.

A preview of Diane von Furstenberg's 2012 spring collection, a superb lunch, "fabulous handbags" and an extensive selection of silent-auction items were among the attractions as the Junior League of Hono*lulu presented its eighth annual "Sacs in the City" luncheon March 3 at the Sheraton Waikiki. "Sacs" supporters Sarah Richards, left, Cherye Pierce, Kimi Matar and Charlotte Pauly checked the bids on some of their favorite silent-auction items after lunch.
