Lobster and crab season ends May 1

Lobster and crab season ends May 1, the Department of Land and Natural Resources reminds the public.

The season for taking ula and ula papapapa (spiny and slipper lobsters) and Kona crabs will then remain closed through the end of August.

State rules are intended to protect lobsters and crabs during the summer, which is the peak of their reproductive season, and to ensure their populations will continue to be sustainable, William Aila, DLNR chairman said.

It is lawful for a commercial marine dealer to sell or for a hotel, restaurant or other eatery to serve lobster legally caught during the open season.

During the open season, catching, taking or possessing a female spiny or slipper lobster or female Kona crab is still prohibited.
