The Navy plans to dispose of up to 20 explosive devices today at Kalaeloa, detonating them near White Plains Beach.
People at White Plains Beach, the Kalaeloa racetrack, or others in the Kapolei area may hear a series of loud noises, Naval Facilities Engineering Command Hawaii announced.
Tentative time for the detonations is between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Detonations are also tentatively scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.
The devices were found during environmental restoration of Ordy Pond, located between the old naval station airfield and White Plains Beach at Kalaeloa.
"This is our second detonation action to protect the public," said Aaron Poentis, Navy Region Hawaii environmental director. "At no time will any of the cultural and archaeological resources adjacent to the project site be at risk. … The Navy has taken important steps to avoid any culturally sensitive areas in executing this cleanup project."
