Former champs advance in Maui Challenger
Defending champion Go Soeda and 2006 champion Michael Russell advanced to the semifinals of the Maui Challenger at Wailea Tennis Club on Friday, along with Tim Smyczek and Mischa Zverev.
Soeda defeated Bradley Klahn 6-4, 6-4, while Russell swept No. 6 seed Denis Kudla 6-4, 6-1. The fourth-seeded Smyczek beat Steve Johnson 6-3, 6-3 and will face top-seeded Soeda today at 10 a.m. Zverev upset fifth-seeded Alex Bogomolov 6-4, 6-1 and will play Russell after the first semifinal.
