UHH’s Imai named player of week

Hawaii Hilo junior guard Kamie Imai was named the player of the week in women’s basketball after helping the Vulcans go 2-0 last week.

The Waiakea High product averaged 14.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game while shooting 52 percent (13-for-25) from the floor in wins over Brigham Young-Hawaii and Holy Names. She had double-doubles in both games as UHH extended its conference winning streak to six.

Helmet Night honors Steinhoff, Manago

Hawaii Pacific will remember two student-athletes who died during the 2010-11 school year between games of a PacWest basketball doubleheader Feb. 9 at Blaisdell Arena.

Basketball player Kameron Steinhoff died following a skateboarding accident in 2011. Baseball player Zachary Manago was killed during an organized bike ride in 2010.

Free bike-skateboard helmets will be given to children on a first-come basis following the 5 p.m. men’s basketball game against Point Loma. The women’s game is at 7:30 p.m.

HPU gave away some 200 helmets last year as part of its "Kam’s Helmets," a program created in conjunction with The Queen’s Medical Center’s Trauma Center and ThinkFirst Hawaii. The program has been renamed "Kam’s and Zach’s Helmets."

All ticket proceeds will be donated to the program. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children and seniors.
