California principal arrested in husband’s slaying

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. » A Bakersfield elementary school principal is being held without bail on suspicion of murdering her husband.

Kern County jail records indicate 46-year-old Leslie Chance was booked today. Sheriff’s officials say the body of her husband, 45-year-old Todd Chance, was found in a field in Bakersfield by farmworkers on Sunday. He died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Kern County Sheriff’s spokesman Ray Pruitt told the Bakerfield Californian he could not release details about the case, although he said the murder weapon has been recovered.

The newspaper reports that Leslie Chance is scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday. It was not immediately clear whether she had an attorney.

Leslie Chance is the principal of Fairview Elementary School. School officials said staff members who learned about her arrest expressed surprise and said the sheriff’s office must have the wrong person.
