Abercrombie looks to attract more sporting events to Hawaii

Hawaii state officials plan to push for more sports on the islands, working to attract new events and expand existing competitions to generate money and exposure.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie said at a news conference today that the state is an ideal host for yachting, rugby and soccer competitions, as well as a good training ground for teams from Asia and elsewhere.

Abercrombie said the sports development initiative is part of Hawaii’s efforts to be an anchor for the Pacific region, not just a bridge between Asian countries and the U.S. mainland.

Lt. Gov. Shan Tsutsui is leading the initiative. Tsutsui says he plans to work with Aloha Stadium to consider development options. He says he can also work with the Hawaii Tourism Authority on the Pro Bowl.
