Egg hunters take heart! The wet weather is diminishing, and the National Weather Service predicts a cool, dry, mostly sunny Easter.
Rain eased on Kauai and Oahu on Wednesday afternoon, but Maui County was to remain under a flash flood watch through 6 a.m. today because of the potential for more showers.
"Everything’s trending towards quieter weather," said National Weather Service lead forecaster Tom Birchard. "The disturbance aloft that’s been supporting the unstable weather is departing to the east."
Windward Maui and windward Hawaii island can expect a wet tradewind day today because of lingering low-level moisture, Birchard said.
On Wednesday night the weather service canceled the flash flood watch for Oahu, which saw no flash floods despite some heavy showers.
A front is expected to come down the island chain Saturday, but it won’t be as wet as the current one, and a cool, dry north wind is expected in its wake, Birchard said. It is not expected to produce rain on Sunday.
The weather service lifted flood advisories for Oahu and Molokai on Wednesday afternoon. Earlier in the day, rain fell at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour in Windward Oahu, Wahiawa and Mililani.
A flash flood warning for Kauai County was lifted just before 2:15 p.m. The warning had been in effect since Tuesday night.
Kauai got the brunt of the rain from the storm system.
Between 2 p.m Monday and 2 p.m. Wednesday, nearly 22 inches fell in Kilohana, near Hanalei.
Kauai firefighters rescued 12 stranded hikers trapped by a swollen Hanakapiai Stream on Wednesday. They also warned three other people who were about to attempt a stream crossing.
On Feb. 22, visitor Norka Villacorta, 43, of New York City died when she was swept away by Hanakapiai Stream during a flash flood. Firefighters that day rescued 54 other hikers who had been stranded in Hanakapiai Valley.
Also on Kauai, one lane of Kuhio Highway reopened in Hanalei after the road was closed Tuesday due to rising water in the Hanalei River.
The state closed the Na Pali Coast State Park and Kalalau Trail until further notice due to flooding.
Hanalei Elementary School was closed Wednesday because of dangerous road conditions and the closure of Hanalei Bridge, the state Department of Education said. The school will resume classes today after being closed, the Department of Education said.
All public schools and school bus transportation services on Kauai will be in operation today.
