Big Isle national wildlife refuge reopens following shutdown

The Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, home to the Daniel K. Inouye Kilauea Point Lighthouse, reopened this morning following the resolution of the budget battles in Congress.

However, all events scheduled in celebration of National Wildlife Refuge Week. Oct. 13-19, will still not be held.

The wildlife refuge areas are maintained by the U.S. Department of Interior, which were closed Oct. 1 due to the lapse in Federal appropriations.

"We are very pleased to be able to open our gates, once again, and let the public enjoy the natural treasures of the National Wildlife Refuges here on Kauai," said Shannon Smith, project leader for the Kauai National Wildlife Refuge Complex.

"We understand this closure has greatly affected everyone, including our local and visiting communities, the Kilauea Point Natural History Association, volunteers and staff," expressed Smith, "and wish to extend a deep appreciation for your patience and understanding."
