KUINI WINS KA HIMENI ‘ANA 2012 COMPETITION: 1. Ka Himeni ‘Ana executive producer Rick Towill, left, and emcee Manu Boyd congratulated members of Kuini — Kapulanakehau Tamure, Keli Mahealani Viernes and Iwalani Hoomanawanuiikanaauao Apo — after they won the Ka Himeni ‘Ana 2012 Hawaiian singing competition Aug. 25 at Hawaii Theatre. The trio was an instant favorite with many members of the audience and displayed its command of three-part falsetto harmonies with striking renditions of “Na U‘i o Kaua‘i” and “Kau‘ionalani.”

“RICHARD” RULES AT ARTS AT MARKS: Director Tony Pisculli, founder of the Hawaii Shakespeare Festival, celebrated with cast members Peggy Anne Siegmund (Cecily, Duchess of York), left, Eden-Lee Murray (Queen Elizabeth), Ann Brandman (Queen Margaret) and Kathryn Mariko Lee (Henry, Earl of Richmond) after his all-female production of Shakespeare’s “Richard III” opened Aug. 24 at the ARTS at Marks Garage. Pisculli presents an all-female production on even-numbered years as a way of providing more opportunities for women to do Shakespeare. With Siegmund, Murray, Brandman and Lee doing stellar work in “Richard III,” the show is one of his all-time best festival productions.

KUINI WINS KA HIMENI ‘ANA 2012 COMPETITION: Honoree Mahi Beamer enjoyed some quiet time with his cousin, Gaye Beamer, during intermission. It was a busy night for Mahi. He provided the pre-show entertainment playing the theater’s pipe organ, was brought up on stage to be formally recognized as this year’s honoree for his career contributions to Hawaiian music, and returned to the stage after the competition to perform with a talented group of family members and friends.

KUINI WINS KA HIMENI ‘ANA 2012 COMPETITION: Ka‘upena Wong, center, talked with Kimo Kahoano and Leilani Kupahu Marino during intermission. Wong was one of friends who performed with Mahi Beamer after the competition. Wong capped the miniconcert with a chant he composed and performed in Beamer’s honor.
