New app targets Civil War buffs

APPOMATTOX, Va. » The Civil War Trust is rolling out its latest in a series of Battle Apps for smartphones.

The Appomattox Battle App culminates with the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia on April 9, 1865.

The nation’s largest nonprofit battlefield preservation organization says more than 110,000 users have downloaded the 10 titles. The apps are intended to enhance a visitor’s experience at Civil War sites.

They include GPS-enabled maps for self-guided tours, chronologies, fact pages and trivia challenges.

The trust’s president, James Lighthizer, says the apps are also a great resource for armchair travelers.

Famed editor’s house to reopen

EMPORIA, Kan. » The Red Rocks State Historic Site, home of famed Kansas journalist William Allen White and his family, will reopen Thursday for the spring and summer travel season.

White was editor of The Emporia Gazette, and he hosted high-profile political and literary guests at his home in Emporia. Theodore Roosevelt was among the five U.S. presidents to visit Red Rocks.

The Historical Society said Tuesday that visiting hours will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday during the season, which ends Oct. 26. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 students; children 5 and younger are admitted free.

Ski resort will charge 1973 price

TELLURIDE, Colo. » The Telluride ski area is rolling back its lift ticket prices on Wednesday by about 40 years.

The resort says one-day lift tickets at the window will be $12 on Wednesday, when it rolls back prices to the 1972-1973 winter. Telluride Ski Resort opened in 1972 with five lifts and a day lodge.

Telluride is scheduled to close for the 2012-2013 season April 7.
