COURTESY JOHN BAESSLER
John Baessler of Waikiki was in Shimoda, Shizuoka prefecture, Japan, three weeks ago when he spotted a new restaurant called Kama'aina on Perry Road, which he described as "the most quaint street in town." History buffs will know that the road is named for Adm. Matthew Perry, who opened Japan to trade with the West. Baessler said Shimoda is a "charming town" that has more in common with Hawaii than Tokyo, including "clean air, clear ocean water, dependable surf and great seafood."
