Big surf and rain are expected by Friday for portions of the state, including potential warning-level surf rising to 25-foot-high faces, according to the National Weather Service.

National Weather Service meteorologist John Bravender said the wet weather will probably reach Kauai by Friday and Oahu by early Saturday.

"There’s also potential for thunderstorms and heavy rainfall throughout the state," Bravender said. "It looks like it will be pretty wet."

For today and Thursday, forecasters predict drier conditions in the mornings and scattered showers with sea breezes in the afternoons.

The islands that need rain the most are the least likely to get them, weather officials said.

National Weather Service hydrologist Kevin Kodama said that while Oahu has moved out of drought conditions in the past couple of weeks, a small portion of West Kauai and large sections of Maui and Hawaii island continue to suffer from drought conditions.

Kodama said some places have been receiving intense rainfall but for insufficient time for the rain to soak into the soil.

He said drought areas on Maui and Hawaii island are in need of many sustained periods of rain.

Kodama said that according to the forecast through the weekend, rain doesn’t look promising for Hawaii island and Maui.

"They might get some," he said.
