HPU coach receives national award
Hawaii Pacific University’s Keenyn Won was named National Coach of the Year by the National Collegiate Acrobatics and Tumbling Association on Wednesday. The first-year head coach oversaw a program in its inaugural year.
Two tumblers, Malyssa Barbasa and Nancy Miceli, were selected All-Americans as well.
Fujikawa tied for 25th after Day 1
Honolulu’s Tadd Fujikawa shot an even-par 71 in the first round of the eGolf Tour’s Columbia Open on Wednesday in Blythewood, S.C.
Fujikawa sits in a group of 12 golfers who are six shots behind co-leaders Brandon Smith and Ryan Sullivan.
After Thursday’s second round, the field will be cut to the low 35 percent and ties for the final two rounds of play.
BWC honors for 8 UH water polo players
Eight members of the University of Hawaii water polo team earned recognition from the Big West Conference with all-conference selections on Wednesday.
Utility player Chloe Barr received Big West Freshman of the Year honors, giving UH its first recipient of the award. She was also named as an honorable mention.
Paula Chillida Esforzado was named to the first team, while Amy Carlson and Danielle Lewis received second-team accolades. Emily Carr, Mirella Coutinho, Caity Lopes Da Silva and Zoe Respondek made honorable mention.
Hawaii finished its season 19-10, with a third-place finish at the Big West Conference tournament last weekend.
HPU is top seed in NCAA West Regional
The Hawaii Pacific men’s tennis team received the No. 1 seed in the West Regional for the 2014 NCAA Division II Men’s Tennis Championships.
HPU and second-seeded UC San Diego are the only West region representatives and automatically advance to the national tournament, May 14-17 in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
The Sea Warriors (17-0) swept all three matches last week en route to their second straight Pacific West Conference tournament title. HPU will face the second team from the Southwest Regional on May 14.
