State Circuit Judge Karen Ahn conferred privately with defense attorneys Hayley Cheng and Thomas Otake and prosecutors Janice Futa and Chasid Sapolu during the first day of the murder retrial of U.S. State Department special agent Christopher Deedy on Thursday. Deedy’s retrial began with both sides attempting to focus the jury on whether Deedy was drunk, provoked and whether he identified himself as a law enforcement officer before fatally shooting Kollin Elderts in a Waikiki McDonald’s restaurant in November 2011.
