Oahu PV systems awaiting inspection can qualify for 2012 tax credit

The city Department of Planning and Permitting said it is accepting requests for electrical inspections for residential photovoltaic systems that will be time-stamped “2012” to allow homeowners to qualify for the 2012 Renewable Energy Technologies tax credit.

Contractors or installers should submit two copies of the inspection request by the close of business Monday to the building permit office at the Fasi Municipal Building. The PV system must be installed by the end of the year.

Electrical inspections to close a PV permit have been taking longer than usual because of the large number of systems being installed, the city said. The department said some residents feared they would not qualify for the 2012 state tax credit if the inspection took place after Dec. 31.

The state Tax Department last month tightened the rules on how much in tax credits a homeowner would be able to claim for a PV installation. The new rules take effect Jan. 1.
