A surfer who died Tuesday after being pulled from a surf break at Makapuu called Suicides had been in a near-death surfing accident last year.

Dwayne Scharsch, 44, of Waimanalo had an accident at Sandy Beach in November.

He was rescued by a lifeguard while surfing off Sandy Beach and was unconscious when pulled out of the water, city Ocean Safety spokeswoman Shayne Enright said.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was administered to Scharsch and he was taken to a hospital.

His sister Rochelle MacFarlane said friends had suggested that Scharsch take it easy because he was still recovering. But MacFarlane said her brother loved surfing.

“It was like breathing,” she said.

On Tuesday, Scharsch was surfing at about 3 p.m. when he encountered difficulty while heading for shore, Enright said.

Enright said ocean conditions were rough and waves were about 3 to 5 feet.

A surfer and off-duty lifeguard helped to bring him ashore, she said.

Efforts were made to revive Scharsch, who was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, she said.

Scharsch was a frequent surfer at the site in Honolulu known as Ala Moana Bowls.

He participated in an Association of Surfing Professionals event in 2010 at Bowls.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office said an autopsy is pending.
