And the winner is: Clement Lau of Honolulu!
Lau turned in a perfect ballot in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s 2015 Oscarama contest.
Readers were asked to pick the winners of the six major Academy Awards — picture, director and the four acting categories — with cinematography as the tiebreaker.
Out of the 673 ballots received, 10 were perfect. A drawing among the finalists determined the three winners.
Lau wins $200, four Consolidated Theatres movie passes and a $40 gift certificate to Wahoo’s Fish Taco.
Second-place winner Jamie Lee of Honolulu will receive $100 and four movie passes. Third-place winner Nicolette Levin will receive $50 and two movie passes.
Lau, 40, said he watched only three of the eight best-picture nominees: "Boyhood," "Birdman" and "The Grand Budapest Hotel."
"When I was younger I didn’t have kids, and I used to watch all of the movies," he said.
"I’ve been kinda busy."
Lau is a Department of Education speech therapist and has two children, Cora, 11, and Colin, 8.
In determining his Oscarama picks, he said he voted with his head in picking "Birdman" as the winner and not his heart. If he had been casting an actual Oscar ballot, he would have put a checkmark next to "Boyhood."
"I guess it was the parent in me; it got me emotional. When I was done watching it, I felt like I really was a part of this kid’s life," he said.
As for the Academy Award-winning "Birdman," "I thought I was going to like it, but I didn’t feel emotionally connected to it."
Lau said he almost didn’t enter the contest because "I never win anything." He decided at the last minute to submit a ballot.
"You made my night. You made my week!" he said.
Lee, an accountant, said she would have voted for "The Grand Budapest Hotel" for best picture.
"I like Wes Anderson films," she said.
The 673 ballots submitted for this year’s Oscarama contest were far fewer than in years past.
The drop in participation likely reflects the general opinion that with few mainstream movies in the running, there would be less interest in the Academy Awards this year.
