BYU takes down No. 1 Hawaii in volleyball

Sophomore hitter Kupono Fey put down a career-high 19 kills but it was not enough as No. 6 Brigham Young upset top-ranked Hawaii 27-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-17 Friday night in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation volleyball match in Provo, Utah.

The loss snapped a 16-match winning streak for the Rainbow Warriors (23-4, 18-3) and dropped them into a tie for first place with UC Irvine. Should Hawaii end up tied with the Anteaters, UCI wins the tiebreaker for the top seed in next week’s MPSF tournament while the Warriors will be the second seed.

Hawaii plays BYU (16-9, 13-8) again Saturday in the regular-season finale for both. UCI Irvine (24-4, 18-3) hosts UC San Diego (2-25, 0-21) Saturday to close out the regular season.

Senior middle Taylor Averill and senior opposite Brook Sedore each finished with 10 kills for Hawaii. Junior libero Kolby Kanetake added 15 digs.

BYU got 14 kills from freshman hitter Brenden Sander and 13 from junior opposite Matt Underwood. The Cougars outblocked the Warriors 14.5-5.5.

Hawaii falls to 3-22 in Smith Fieldhouse, including 12 consecutive losses.
