Honolulu police are investigating the vehicular accident that resulted in the death of a pedestrian in McCully as a negligent homicide.
The severity of a negligent homicide offense ranges from a misdemeanor to a felony.
The police said the investigation is continuing and that no charges have been filed against the suspect, a 76-year-old man who was driving a Lexus sedan.
The victim, 86-year-old Elsie Cabanatan, lived in the McCully area.
Cabanatan, a housewife and mother of nine children, had lived in Ewa Beach but after the death of her husband, she sold the family’s home and moved to Honolulu, her family said.
She visited Hawaii island regularly to see her daughter-in-law Starlene Lee and grandchildren.
"She was a beautiful lady," Lee said.
Police said Cabanatan was walking on a makai sidewalk in the Ewa direction on South King Street near Wiliwili Street when she was struck by the sedan at about 8:45 a.m. on April 9.
She was taken in critical condition with multiple injuries to the Queen’s Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Police said the sedan struck the rear end of a truck, drove past the truck on the driver side, then careened onto the makai sidewalk, striking Cabanatan as well as three parked cars in a nearby shopping center.
Last week, police said the investigation team was looking at whether excessive speed was a factor and preliminarily ruled out alcohol or a medical episode as a cause.
Police said the driver had borrowed the car from a friend.
Cabanatan’s death marked the seventh pedestrian fatality on Oahu this year, compared with 10 in 2014.
