Gonzaga plays Dayton in Maui first round

Gonzaga, the No. 1 team in last season’s final AP college basketball poll, will face Dayton in the opening round of the EA Sports Maui Invitational in Lahaina, while Final Four participant Syracuse will meet Minnesota and first-year coach Richard Pitino.

The other first-round games on Nov. 25 at the Lahaina Civic Center will be California against Arkansas and Baylor against Division II host Chaminade, tournament officials announced Wednesday.

The Gonzaga-Dayton and Chaminade-Baylor winners will meet in one semifinal with the Syracuse-Minnesota and Arkansas-California winners in the other. The championship game is Nov. 27.

Skalman is a Good Works nominee

Former ‘Iolani athlete Andrew Skalman is a nominee for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

Skalman, a defensive back for Washington University in St. Louis, is one of 151 nominees.

A final roster of 22 award recipients will be unveiled in September.

The award goes to "players who have made a commitment to enriching the lives of others while contributing to the greater good of their communities," according to award organizers.

9 yachts hold Transpac division leads

Lending Club, the name of the Tritium Racing boat trying to become the fastest elapsed-time finisher in Transpacific Yacht Race history, leads Division 9 in corrected time in the Los Angeles to Honolulu race.

The expected arrival of Lending Club, skippered by John Sangmeister, is today at Diamond Head. The crew departed Los Angeles on Saturday and is trying for a record time of 4 1/2 days.

The other corrected time division leaders as of Tuesday were: Bad Pak (Division 1), Lucky (D-2), Pyewacket (D-3), Resolute (D-4), Foil (D-5), Horizon (D-6), Ten Quarter (D-7) and Dorade (D-8).

Island Movers’ baseball tour continues

The Hawaii Island Movers baseball team went 1-2 in recent games on its Japan goodwill tour.

The Movers defeated Kansai 4-2 on Sunday, but suffered two straight defeats — 8-1 to Tohoku Fukushi on Tuesday and 5-1 to Tohoku Gakuen on Wednesday.

Hawaii is 3-5-1 overall on the trip.

Lanan Rice-Kashima had two hits against Tohoku Gakuen and drove in a run against Kansai.

Hawaii wrestlers win national titles

Josh Terao, a three-time state high school champion at Mid-Pacific Institute, won the Greco-Roman national title at 120 pounds in Fargo, N.D., on Tuesday.

Also, Kamehameha’s Teshya Alo won the Cadet division national title.

UH swimmer to compete in Deaflympics

University of Hawaii junior swimmer Peggy Liang will be in the 22nd Summer Deaflympics, which begin July 26 at Sofia, Bulgaria. The international competition features 19 sports.

Liang will compete in freestyle (50, 100 and 200 meters) and butterfly (50 and 100). The Vancouver, Wash., native won three gold medals at the World Deaf Swimming Championships in high school.

Several of Liang’s diving teammates are also competing in major meets.

Sophomore Lauren Hall will be at the USA Diving National Zone B Preliminary next week at Florida State, trying to qualify for the senior nationals. Former Wahine Daniella Nero and Stephanie DeLima, and Laie resident Orlando Duque will compete at the FINA World Championships in Barcelona. That starts Friday.

In April, UH sophomore Aimee Harrison and former Wahine Emma Friesen finished 19th and 13th on the 3-meter springboard at the Canadian FINA Grand Prix. A few weeks later, Friesen scored a personal best 322.35 points in finishing second at the FINA Grand Prix in Puerto Rico. Harrison was fifth.

Friesen defended her Canadian national title at 1 meter soon after, with Harrison fourth. In 3 meters, Harrison took third and Friesen fourth.

Nero, who just graduated, placed sixth at both 1 and 3 meters at an international invitational in Italy in May. Representing Sweden at the European Diving Championships, she was 13th on the 3-meter springboard and 17th on the 1 meter.

Duque, from Columbia, has won nine world championship cliff diving titles. He has been competing in the Red Bull Cliff Diving tour this summer, taking fourth in France, third in Denmark and second in Portugal. He is currently third in the overall standings.
