Honolulu police said alcohol and drugs appear to be contributing factors in a vehicular accident in Palolo that left a 50-year-old passenger in critical condition.
The Honolulu man was riding in a van heading north on Palolo Avenue when the 43-year-old driver lost control and struck a couple of parked and unoccupied vehicles at 12:30 a.m. Sunday, authorities said.
The accident took place near Kikilia Place.
The injured man was taken to a hospital.
Suspect allegedly tried to kill police officer
A Maui man was being held in lieu of more than $1 million in bail after allegedly using a stolen sport utility vehicle to try to run down a police officer.
Kalama Harry, 31, of Haiku was being held in lieu of $1,007,400 bail by police.
He has been charged with several felonies, including first-degree attempted murder, first-degree criminal property damage and two counts of vehicular theft.
Maui police said officers responded to a complaint by a caller about a car swerving “all over the road” that ended up parking at a Longs Drugs in Wailuku.
Police saw Harry and another man enter the SUV, and a police car pulled up behind them.
Maui police said Harry reversed into the police car, then jumped a curb and accelerated toward the other police officer.
“The second officer jumped out the the way in fear of being struck,” police said in a statement.
Police pursued Harry and the passenger until they abandoned the vehicle on Puumakani Street in Kahului, near three elementary schools that went into lockdown as a precaution.
Police said Harry was later arrested but that officers were still looking for the man who was riding with him. Police said both the vehicle and a moped that fell from the vehicle during the chase were stolen.
A conviction on first-degree attempted murder — which includes trying to kill a police officer — carries a penalty of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Victim injured as car goes off the freeway
A man was injured Sunday when the car he was in went off the road near the eastbound merge of the H-1 and H-2 freeways.
The crash, caught on traffic cameras, happened at about 2:27 p.m.
An ambulance was called. Police were still investigating the cause of the accident.
The man was placed on a backboard, but the extent of his injuries was uncertain.
