BUFFALO, N.Y. » Authorities say a man who carried one of his children out of a burning western New York apartment house and went back inside to rescue others was one of two people to die in the fire.

Buffalo fire officials say the blaze broke out around 4 a.m. today in a two-story home shared by members of the same family. Authorities say a man living in the downstairs apartment carried his 8-year-old daughter outside before going back in for his wife and two other children, who made it out safely.

The man died, as did another man living in the upstairs apartment.

The 8-year-old is hospitalized with burns to 90 percent of her body. Authorities say a 3-year-old boy is being treated for smoke inhalation and a 1-year-old boy was not injured.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

Red Cross and the Salvation Army rescue. Putting my contribution during Christmas time into the kettle to good use.

My wife demands me to set up a fire escape route at home. I already installed more smoke detectors per her request.

Call a carpenter to install a second door, sliding door, or hatch door to the outside of every room. Add rope ladders for second floor rooms. There was a fire in which the mother and son died from smoke inhalation on the second floor here in Honolulu. I have a large ax in every bedroom just in case I can’t escape out the bedroom door. Will use it to smash open the windows. Also have Alert Alarm smoke detectors (understand there are fire, heat, and/or smoke detectors) in all my rooms. Paid extra to have strobe lights connected to the computer so they will flash extremely brightly above my beds. You might have to buy flashing strobe ceiling lights from Amazon.com or any online police equipment store. It has been proven sound alarms don’t awaken sleeping tenants. When I read sad news like this I always think how I can learn from other people’s mistakes or misfortunes.

Anyone with young kids would give their life for their kids. This man has literally done that, in my mind he is a hero. It’s one thing to say and think it but it’s another to act. As a father I can only hope to have the courage and bravery he had. My condolences to his family for their loss. And that poor 8 year old had burns over 90% but hopefully she can live a fulfilling life and recover from her injuries.

How horrific!! I’m so sorry for the family’s loss of the father…and that poor girl, 90% of her body covered in burns. I can’t even imagine. Wishing her strength for what will be a long and grueling recovery…I hope she fights for life knowing her father died saving her.

The landlord has to do his share of protecting his tenants.
