UH soccer beats Nevada on opening weekend
Addie Steiner scored off an assist from Raisa Strom-Okimoto in the 87th minute to give the Hawaii soccer team a 2-1 victory over Nevada today at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
UH (1-0-1) earned a co-champion share of the Outrigger Soccer Classic series with Oregon, which defeated Gonzaga by a goal earlier in the day. UH and Oregon tied 1-1 on Friday.
Steiner, a senior transfer from Northwestern, earned her 20th Division I goal and first in a Rainbow Wahine uniform.
Nevada (0-2) tied it up in the 76th minute on a free kick by Rylee Peterson. Petersen’s low blast found a hole in the UH wall and got past goalkeeper Monk Berger.
The Rainbow Wahine got on the board first, a 17th-minute penalty kick by Strom-Okimoto. Sonest Furtado earned the kick on a takedown by a Nevada player in the penalty box.
The last time UH had a winning record at any point of a season was five games into the 2013 season.
