WASHINGTON >> Air conditioning company Carrier Corp. says it has reached a deal with President-elect Donald Trump to keep nearly 1,000 jobs in Indiana. Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence plan to travel to the state Thursday to unveil the agreement alongside company officials.
Trump confirmed the meeting on Twitter late Tuesday, promising a “Great deal for workers!”
Trump spent much of his campaign pledging to keep companies like Carrier from moving jobs overseas. His focus on manufacturing jobs contributed to his unexpected appeal with working-class voters in states like Michigan, which has long voted for Democrats in presidential elections.
The details of the agreement were unclear. Carrier tweeted that the company was “pleased to have reached a deal” with Trump and Pence to keep the jobs in Indianapolis.
Neither Wilbur Ross, Trump’s pick for commerce secretary, nor Steven Mnuchin — the banker picked to be treasury secretary — would discuss specifics about the agreement on Wednesday. But Mnuchin told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” that Trump and his administration are “going to have open communications with business leaders.”
He said Trump called the CEO of Carrier’s parent company and said it was “important to keep jobs here.”
Both Trump and Pence, who is ending his tenure as Indiana governor, are expected to appear with Carrier officials Thursday.
In February, Carrier said it would shutter its Indianapolis plant employing 1,400 workers and move its manufacturing to Mexico. The plant’s workers would have been laid off over three years starting in 2017.
United Technologies Electronic Controls also announced then that it planned to move its Huntington manufacturing operations to a new plant in Mexico, costing the northeastern Indiana city 700 jobs by 2018. Those workers make microprocessor-based controls for the HVAC and refrigeration industries.
Carrier and UTEC are both units of Hartford, Connecticut-based United Technologies Corp. — which also owns Pratt & Whitney, a big supplier of fighter jet engines that relies in part on U.S. military contracts.
In a September debate against Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, Trump railed against Carrier’s plans.
“So many hundreds and hundreds of companies are doing this,” Trump said. “We have to stop our jobs from being stolen from us. We have to stop our companies from leaving the United States.”
Carrier wasn’t the only company Trump assailed during the campaign. He pledged to give up Oreos after Nabisco’s parent, Mondelez International, said it would replace nine production lines in Chicago with four in Mexico. He criticized Ford after the company said it planned to invest $2.5 billion in engine and transmission plants in Mexico.
Chuck Jones, president of United Steelworkers Local 1999, which represents Carrier workers, said of Tuesday’s news: “I’m optimistic, but I don’t know what the situation is. I guess it’s a good sign. … You would think they would keep us in the loop. But we know nothing.”
The event Thursday in Indiana will be a rare public appearance for Trump, who has spent nearly his entire tenure as president-elect huddled with advisers and meeting with possible Cabinet secretaries. He plans to make other stops later this week as part of what advisers have billed as a “thank you” tour for voters who backed him in the presidential campaign.

It says in the first paragraph that “nearly 1,000 jobs” will be kept in Indiana. But later on, it’s mentioned that the Carrier plant actually has 1,400 workers. What happens to the other 400 workers?
The other company, UTEP, still plans to move its manufacturing operations to Mexico, costing 700 jobs.
400 deleted Carrier workers + 700 UTEP jobs lost to Mexico = 1,100 jobs lost.

How much is this costing the taxpayer per job saved?
Do you know or understand anything about the economics of this “deal”? I’m pretty sure the answer to that is no.
The deal probably will not cost the taxpayers as much as the $80 billion Obama used to bail out the auto industry.

What is the deal? The worker’s union doesn’t even know what the deal is…does it involve federal subsidies? Federal tax breaks? The president can just unilaterally and without approval make this kind of micro decision? I really want Mr. Trump to succeed…the country needs to get back on its feet…but I am sure that everyone, including the working class citizen that voted for him (meaning all of us unwashed peons that do not make more than a million per year) are hoping that big tax breaks for big companies will will have benefits that trickle down to all of us living in the muck.

Also reported is that UTEP is moving to Mexico, costing Hastings, Indiana 700 jobs by 2018. No mention of what, if anything, Trump wants to do about that.
For those who can read, this is not a feel-good story at this point. Yet, the headline makes it sound like the Trump has already “saved” the USA economy. Proof again that the MAINSTREAM MEDIA IS BIASED!

You recall Solyndra? You recall bailouts for Chrysler and GM? It is definitely the business of political leaders to keep constituents employed. This is nothing new, but it is recently overlooked.
On the surface, it’s great PR and awesome for the thousand facing job loss. Buried in the story is this paragraph:

Are we talking pay-to-play here? You save a thousand jobs and we’ll remember when your contract runs out?
Where does Trump get paid (that’s what Pay-to-Play means)? Sounds like the beneficiaries of any “deal” are the American workers.
I guess all the negative responses means that those folks would rather have seen all the jobs stay or leave. It’s called the “Art of the Deal”, you don’t get everything you want and the other person doesn’t either. I’m sure the 1000 workers who keep their jobs won’t complain one bit about the deal.
This is what conservatives feared about Trump. Conservatives see this as a subsidy to Carrier. We pay carrier to keep an inefficient plant in the US as the Cato Institute put it. But Unions and Sanders supporters love it. I personally am happy to see Trump keep to his pro-worker promises. Hopefully we did not have to give too much to get Carrier to stay.
And what was OUR President and the Indiana congressional delegation doing all this time? Reminds me when the base closing commission was going to close down Pearl Harbor Navy yard–and who came to the rescue??? A Republican governor!! While our Democratic delegation, including our very senior senator, Uncle Dan just accepted it!!!

Mrs. Palin couldn’t even finish her term as governor. She never finished anything she started, including learning how to speak English. She is ever less qualified than Mr. Trump is for government service.
I can recall one Senator, the Chair of the Ways and Means Committee–who did intervene one time. He got $125,000,000 for HIS bank in Hawaii and yes, Uncle Dan somehow figured a way that they didn’t pay it back. And, THAT people was taxpayer money down the Ali Wai drain!!!

Hopefully they make sure that deal is valid before signing anything or getting any promissory note from Trump. Trump is a master bait and switch artist and has conned many businesses before, and looks like Carrier will be left holding the bag and end up in bankruptcy just like Trump’s other business ventures if they are not careful. Trump’s answer probably will be the usual “sue me”.

Under Obama, the government was paid back every penny of the money used to bail out the auto industry. Let’s see what happens here when all the details come out.
