Photographer Henry Diltz, who attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa and formed the Modern Folk Quartet in Honolulu during the folk-rock explosion of 1962, went on to shoot famed portraits of ’60s and ’70s musical stars such as Neil Young, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell and James Taylor in California, at Woodstock and around the world.

Diltz has expanded and reissued “Unpainted Faces,” his retrospective book of images. It’s a blast, with candid images of groundbreaking artists over the decades, including a young Garth Brooks, who performed a series of sold-out concerts at Blaisdell Arena last month. The gallery hosts an exhibition in tribute to Neil Young that opens Jan. 12 and runs through Jan. 30. Young, 70, remains a touchstone for rockers, headlining the Desert Trip concerts in California last year alongside The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Roger Waters and The Who. The exhibit features images of Young from the ’60s through the present, shot by Diltz, Joel Bernstein, Danny Clinch and Julie Gardner.
