High surf today continues to pound most of the Hawaiian Islands due to a low-pressure system to the northeast which is feeding a large north swell.

Weather officials extended a high-surf warning for the north and east shores of most islands through 6 p.m. today as surf is expected to slowly decline through tomorrow.

North-facing shores are seeing surf up to 20 to 25 feet today, with east-facing shores getting surf up to 10 to 15 feet.

“Expect very strong breaking waves and strong currents,” the National Weather Service said in a bulletin. “Breaking waves may occasionally impact harbors making navigating the harbor channel dangerous.”

Meanwhile, a wind advisory is in effect for Lanai and leeward Kohala, the Kohala mountains and areas south of Volcano on Hawaii island through 6 a.m. Saturday.

National Weather Service officials said affected areas should see winds from the northeast of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph.

Motorists should use extra caution, weather officials warned.
