The homeless sweeps make the news because of the humans involved, those living in the streets as well as the neighbors and businesses who complain about the problem.

But as the most recent sweep of the Nimitz Highway bike path this week reveals, pets have to be numbered among the homeless as well. Nine dogs and 10 guinea pigs were turned over to the Hawaiian Humane Society, with workers trying to track down more that had run off.

It really does speak to the attachment to pets that families cling to them even through the trauma of homelessness. That’s a truly human trait.

Trump’s travel ban get the go-ahead, for now

Hawaii’s challenges to the Trump administration’s various travel bans have prompted fierce debate, including ineffective calls for tourists to boycott the isles. Now the U.S. Supreme Court has allowed the latest version of the travel ban to proceed, pending resolution of legal challenges in two appeals courts, which appear to be moving ahead this week.

No doubt both sides, as well as the general public, look forward to the issue being settled, most likely by the Supreme Court itself. Stay tuned.
