Maui fire personnel rescues visitors stranded by high stream waters

Maui fire personnel rescued a visiting couple in their 30s who were stranded at 12:32 p.m. today in high stream waters in East Maui.

Firefighters found the pair at 1:07 p.m. on the other side of the first stream crossing on the Bamboo Forest Trail, not far from the trailhead, a Maui Fire Department press release said.

The Maui Fire Department’s Air-1 helicopter airlifted the couple to a pasture near the trailhead on Hana Highway at about 1:40 p.m.

The 33-year-old man and 30-year-old woman visiting from Washington D.C. made the first stream crossing, but did not want to chance crossing the stream on their return trip.

Another group of hikers did not risk crossing the stream, and called for help upon seeing the couple stuck on the other side.
