Girl who died after H-2 freeway collision is identified

An 8-year-old girl who died from injuries sustained in an April 5 crash on the H-2 freeway near Waipio Gentry has been identified as Neenawaimainalani Betham of Wahiawa, according to the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office.

The cause of Betham’s death is pending.

Police said a Honda Fit and Nissan Altima were traveling southbound on the freeway when the cars collided as one of the vehicles’ drivers attempted to change lanes.

The Honda operated by a 33-year-old Wahiawa man lost control and struck a tree. Emergency Medical Services transported him to a hospital in serious condition.

Betham who was a passenger in the Honda was transported in extremely critical condition to a hospital and died Tuesday.

Speed and alcohol were not involved in the crash, according to police.
