Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park is on track to open 10 a.m. Saturday with free admission on that day, the National Park Service said.
Park visitors should anticipate heavy traffic, long lines, delays and one-third fewer parking spaces than before, officials said. In addition, there will be limited services and no potable water as the park continues to recover from the recent Kilauea eruption.
Most of the park has been closed to visitors since May 11 due to hazardous volcanic and seismic activity at the Kilauea summit, which damaged many structures and roads.
KAHULUI MAN, 64, DIES AFTER TOW TRUCK CRASH
A 64-year-old man died after he was struck by a tow truck near a shopping center in Kahului.
He has been identified as Van Tomita of Kahului.
Police said a white 1992 Isuzu flatbed tow truck was making a right turn out of the Maui Marketplace onto Dairy Road at approximately 1:10 p.m. Monday when the truck collided into a pedestrian later identified as Tomita.
Tomita was operating an electric personal mobility device within a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision.
Police said he was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he later died from injuries sustained in the crash.
