Watch. Every time a light turns red, one or more cars run through it. They also run through the pedestrian walk signal at the same time.
Crosswalks are not the safest place to cross a street. Drivers don’t stop. People are on cell phones while driving and distracted, or in too much of a hurry to let the pedestrian go first.
The safest time to cross the street is when nothing is coming, crosswalk or no. But guess what: You can get fined $130 for doing so.
Put more of the responsibility for pedestrian safety on cars. Until red lights, no cell phones and yielding to pedestrians in crosswalks are enforced, the cost will continue to be high.
A car has never been killed by a pedestrian.
