I read the morning newspaper every morning. I particularly enjoyed David Shapiro’s “Volcanic Ash” column (“Firm federal law enforcers cover for local indifference,” Star-Advertiser, Feb. 17). Snafus have been prevailing for many years in Hawaii — “the sewer of improbity swirling around us,” as Shapiro put it.

It’s certainly welcome to have State Attorney General Clare Connors petition the state Supreme Court to suspend City Prosecutor Keith Kaneshiro. Connors comes with a very distinguished background.

Other government officials who have done remarkable work are Loretta Sheehan, the chairwoman of the Honolulu Police commission; Police Chief Susan Ballard; and the unforgettable fomer Gov. Linda Lingle.

These and many other government officials are female. Truly their voices in leadership have been overlooked too long in government.
