Did anyone else find interesting the news that the Thirty Meter Telescope protesters were building a permanent wooden structure on Mauna Kea?

The self-proclaimed “protectors” are protesting the construction of a telescope on Mauna Kea. They say it’s because Mauna Kea is sacred land and should not be desecrated with buildings.

This never made any sense, of course, because the slopes of Mauna Kea were used for ranching at the request of the royal family, and people traveled up its slopes even in times of the monarchy.

But I digress. Whatever flawed logic used to arrive at the protesters’ position is now totally irrelevant. In a place where they said construction was a desecration to sacred land, they did some construction of their own (“2 arrested as crew tears down illegal protest structure near Mauna Kea camp,” Star-Advertiser, Top News, Sept. 6).

So what is it, then? Construction is desecration? Or just the construction projects managed by our democratically elected officials, and not their own?
