Off-duty officer hits boy with vehicle

A boy went to the hospital yesterday after he was hit by a vehicle driven by an off-duty police officer in Kapolei.

Police said the boy, 11, was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in serious condition with shoulder pain.

The accident occurred at 91-1016 Kahalepouli St., at about 3:25 p.m.

According to police, the boy unexpectedly rode into the street while lying down on a skateboard. Police said the officer did not see the boy, but heard a thump.

Boater is saved after losing kayak

Firefighters rescued a kayaker who fell into the water and drifted out to sea yesterday off Kalaeloa.

A caller reported seeing the man having trouble reaching his kayak off of Nimitz Beach at about 4:20 p.m., said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Earle Kealoha.

Firefighters on a small watercraft picked up the man and brought him back to shore about 20 minutes later.

A fire helicopter and rescue boat were turned back after the rescue.

Kealoha said the man might have had slight injuries but refused treatment at the beach.

Gunman robs motorist in Kalihi

A man sitting in his car in Kalihi early yesterday morning was robbed at gunpoint, police said.

Police are looking for a male suspect who approached the 64-year-old man and asked for a lighter at 1:20 a.m.

The suspect lit his cigarette, threw the lighter back at the man and then reached into the car and grabbed an iPod, police said.

When the man asked for the iPod back, the suspect allegedly pulled out a gun, demanded money and fled, police said.

Officers searched the area but did not locate the suspect.

Police did not give a more specific description of the suspect or location of the incident.

Good Samaritan assaulted in heist

Police were looking for a suspect who robbed a convenience store Wednesday in Kaimuki.

The gunman entered the Waialae Avenue store at about 3:10 p.m. and demanded money from a 19-year-old woman while brandishing a handgun. When a 54-year-old man attempted to intervene, the robber assaulted him, police said.

The robber fled with an undisclosed amount of cash in a white van.

Puna man gone missing turns up OK

Big Island police have called off the search for a 57-year-old Puna man.

Gary Neumann of Leilani Estates was found unharmed Tuesday night, police said. Police put out a call after acquaintances said they had last heard from him on Nov. 17.
