More than 10,000 gallons of wastewater goes into Honolulu Harbor

Warning signs are posted along the Kapalama Canal and Honolulu Harbor after a grease-clogged sewer line overflowed and spilled 10,250 gallons of wastewater into a storm drain that leads to the canal, officials said.

The spill, at 1622 Ahiahi Place in Lanikila, was discovered at about 3:35 p.m. Monday after city crews responded to an odor complaint, a spokesman for the city Department of Environmental Services said,

Crews found the source of the odor in a 6-inch reinforced concrete pipe and cleaned, disinfected and deodorized the site by 7 p.m.

The state Department of Health advises people to stay out of the canal and postpone diving operations from Piers 27 to 39.
