Suspicious package prompts evacuation of UH-Manoa buildings

A suspicious envelope found today near a cafe at the University of Hawaii at Manoa prompted officials to evacuate students in nearby buildings.

At about 7:30 a.m., police responded to a report of suspicious package in the loading dock of Paradise Palms Cafe, near Hamilton Library. FBI personnel and the Fire Department’s hazardous materials team also responded.

Students were evacuated from the cafe, library, Moore Hall, Agricultural Engineering Institute and St. John Plant Science Laboratory.

Capt. Terry Seelig, Fire Department spokesman, said the envelope was examined and "it was determined to not be a danger to the community."

At noon, all affected buildings were re-opened.
