Copper thieves hit H-3 near Halawa Interchange

The state is looking for information on the latest theft of electrical copper wiring from Oahu’s highways, this time the H-3 freeway.

Sometime last month, wiring was cut on the Halawa side of the H-3 freeway tunnels near the Halawa Interchange, leaving all emergency call boxes and six traffic-monitoring cameras inoperable, the Department of Transportation said today in a news release.

In addition, fiber optic communications cables controlling electronic message boards on the Halawa side were also cut, and the copper wiring in several conduits were cut but not taken.

The state is asking the public for help in trying to stop future thefts, asking motorists who see suspicious activity to call 911 to report it.
