Fire rescue personnel were kept busy Monday morning helping two hikers who got in trouble on two separate mountain trails — Manana and Manoa Falls.

One of the hikers had to spend the night on the Manana Trail in Pearl City after leaving his hiking party Sunday afternoon. The man had to be airlifted by the fire helicopter at 7:30 this morning, Capt. Terry Seelig, Fire Department spokesman, said.

Seelig said the man was in a party of five hikers who headed for the waterfall on the Manana Trail at 2 p.m. Sunday. At one point the hiking party split, with four people going one way and the man going another. The man did not have a cell phone or any food or water.

When the rest of the hiking party returned to the vehicles, the man was not there at 4:30 p.m. The Fire Department was called. The search for the man was called off about 6:30 p.m. because of darkness.

Rescue attempts were resumed at 6:30 a.m. Monday and searchers found the missing hiker about a half hour later. The hiker was airlifted and was reported to be in good shape.

About 10 a.m. Monday, firefighters responded to a report that a man had fallen 80 feet into the pool below Manoa Falls.

Responding fire rescue personnel hiking into the area ran into the hiker who was making his way back to the trailhead with a few bruises and cuts. The hiker refused medical treatment.
